May 2019, Meeting of UW Medicine/ Northwest Hospital & Medical Center Lymphedema Support Group
May 11 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Please join us for this substantive program and heartfelt tribute to Elaine Eigeman.
In the first hour, Melony Handran, Medical Advisor for for the Pacific Northwest, for Essity, a BSN Medical Company—which includes Jobst, Jovi-Pak and Farrow products—will present about her activities regarding lymphedema care and treatment. https://www.bsnmedical.com/bsn-medical.html
In the second hour, we are going to remember and celebrate Elaine Eigeman, who died peacefully at home on April 24th with her husband, Daniel Schalke at her side, after battling the return of lobular breast cancer.
Besides being a member of this support group and a longstanding Board Member of the Northwest Lymphedema Center, Elaine was a fearless Advocate for lymphedema patients not only in the Pacific Northwest, but across the nation. A long-time supporter of and participant in Cancer Lifeline and Team Survivor programs, Elaine used her incredible energy and passion to launch an advocacy career as the tireless Board Chair of the Lymphedema Advocacy Group promoting passage of the Lymphedema Treatment Act that would assure insurance coverage for compression garments for Medicare patients—coverage that does not currently exist. Along the way she touched the hearts and minds of everyone she had the chance to meet with her compassion, dedication and inspiration to find solutions to whatever obstacles there were to achieving a better world for lymphedema patients. https://lymphedematreatmentact.org/
Vivian Fox, our Cancer Lifeline Facilitator, will lead us through this part of the meeting. Laura Martin, was a dear friend and spent a lot of time at home with Elaine during the last part of her journey. Laura will share some reflections for those who may not have known Elaine, or for those who were unable to visit her one she began hospice care. Meryl Shier is a long-time friend of Elaine’s, and also is a Healthy Steps Educator from whom Elaine took classes. Meryl will guide us through some Healthy Steps movement with music, as a short tribute that we can all participate in together. Vivian will lead us through a time of sharing and reflecting.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, July 14th from 1-3 pm at the Mountaineers Club, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98115.
An obituary will be published on Mother’s Day, May 12th.
